Port Fairy (historically known as Belfast) is a town in south-western Victoria, Australia. It lies on the Princes Highway in the Shire of Moyne , 28 kilometres (17 mi) west of Warrnambool and 290 kilometres (180 mi) west of Melbourne , at the point where the Moyne River enters the Southern Ocean .
Lady Julia Percy Island is 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) south-south-west of Yambuk, and 21 kilometres (13 mi) south-west of Port Fairy.The island is about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) in length by 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) in width, with an area of 1.33 square kilometres (0.51 sq mi), comprising a plateau, varying in height from 32–46 metres (105–151 ft) asl, surrounded by cliffs, rock platforms and reefs.
Griffiths Island Lighthouse was built in 1859 as a navigation aid at a time when Port Fairy was becoming an important trading port for western Victoria. Extensive harbour works undertaken then and subsequently, mainly to improve the navigability of the Moyne River and its approaches, have affected the shape and boundaries of the island.

The river flows generally south, joined by two minor tributaries, spills into the Belfast Lough and then reaches its mouth to empty into Port Fairy Bay in the Bass Strait near Port Fairy. The river descends 190 metres (620 ft) over its 82-kilometre (51 mi) course. [1] [2] The mouth of the river has been significantly altered.
Codrington is a rural locality on Portland Bay in the south-west of Victoria, Australia, on the Princes Highway between Portland and Port Fairy. It is a sparsely populated area; at the 2016 census the district had a population of 52 persons, living in 15 dwellings. [1]
The port and the town are named after Captain Alexander Campbell, a whaler and colonist of the Port Fairy region. The town was settled in the 1870s, with the first wharf being built in 1880. [4] Port Campbell Post Office opened on 19 March 1874. It was renamed Port Campbell West in 1881 when a new Port Campbell office opened near the wharf. [5]
