Henderson County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 82,150. [1] The county seat is Athens. [2] The county is named in honor of James Pinckney Henderson, the first attorney general of the Republic of Texas, and secretary of state for the republic. [3] He later served as the first governor of Texas.
Dawson County, formed in 1858 in what is now Kinney County and Uvalde County and abolished in 1866 (not to be confused with the present-day Dawson County). Encinal County, formed in 1856. History. Cross Roads is at the junction of Farm roads 59 and 3441 in southwestern Henderson County. The town was founded in 1846 by the Reverend Hezekiah Mitcham and his wife Mary Clarke Mitcham, who had come from Marengo County, Alabama, according to that county's 1830 Census. The earliest settlement was called Science Hill.
