The first light was established on the pier head in 1891. [4] In 1893, the channel had a depth of 8.5 feet (2.6 m) with north and south piers 500 feet (150 m) long with a red light on a 23-foot (7.0 m) high pole. [5]
Manistee Golf and Country Club was established in 1901 and is located within the city of Manistee. There are three public beaches, Fifth Avenue Beach with the small man-made lake next to Fifth Avenue Beach and First Street Beach, located respectively north and south of the harbor entrance on the shore of Lake Michigan. In 1912, Congress passed the River and Harbor Act, which authorized the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to start work on a series of improvements at Manistee Harbor. These included a series of dredging projects, the shortening of the south pier, and the construction of a 1300-foot south breakwater, with a shore connection about 1,200 ft long.

Cross Village is located in northwestern Emmet County, on the shore of Lake Michigan at the southern limit of Sturgeon Bay. The community is in Cross Village Township.The northern terminus of M-119 is in Cross Village; the highway runs south along the lakeshore 20 miles (32 km) to Harbor Springs.
