The Charleston Historic District, alternatively known as Charleston Old and Historic District, is a National Historic Landmark District in Charleston, South Carolina. [2] [4] The district, which covers most of the historic peninsular heart of the city, contains an unparalleled collection of 18th and 19th-century architecture, including many distinctive Charleston "single houses".
The city of Charleston is the location of 105 of these properties and districts, including 34 of the National Historic Landmarks; they are listed here, while the other properties and districts in the remaining parts of the county are listed separately. Another property in Charleston was once listed but has been removed.
It was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. [1] Chalmers Street in the French Quarter District, May 2010. The neighborhood was settled as part of the original Grande Modell of Charles Towne in 1680. It is famous for its art galleries; it also has many restaurants and places of commerce as well as Charleston's Waterfront Park.
Contributing properties are defined through historic district or historic preservation zoning laws, usually at the local level. [4] Zoning ordinances pertaining to historic districts are designed to maintain a district's historic character by controlling demolition and alteration to existing properties. [ 5 ]
The historic district has three distinct sections. The main section is bounded by Mary, King, Meeting, and John Streets, north of Charleston's historic downtown area, and includes the Aiken House, surviving elements of the main railroad depot, and associated warehouses.
