Morris' Company of Rangers (1789-1793) also referred to as the "Kanawha County Rangers" was a Ranger Company out of the newly established Kanawha County in 1789. [1] From March to July 1789 the Kanawha County Rangers were under the command of Colonel George Clendenin until Clendenin was named as commander of the county militia by the Governor of Virginia.
In 1974, the school became involved in a notable textbook controversy, the so-called "Battle of the Books" . In order to comply with a 1970 mandate to provide multicultural reading material, the board of education for Kanawha County took up a motion to purchase 300 different titles of new language arts textbooks.
Randolph County is the largest by area at 1,040 square miles (2,694 km 2), and Hancock County is the smallest at 83 square miles (215 km 2). [8] Kanawha County contributed land to the founding of 12 West Virginia counties [12] and has the largest population (174,805 in 2023). Wirt County has the smallest population (5,000 in 2023). [13]
