The Roman Catholic Diocese of Penang is situated in the northern as well as the east coast region of Peninsular Malaysia covering 4 northern states, namely Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak as well as the east coast state of Kelantan. It was created on 25 February 1955 together with the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception (Malay: Gereja Kandungan Suci, Tamil: அமலோற்பவ அன்னை தேவாலயம்) is a Roman Catholic church within George Town in the Malaysian state of Penang. The church was founded in 1811 and is the second-oldest church in the diocese after Church of the Assumption.
On 7 July 2012, Benedict XVI appointed Francis the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Penang. [3] [2] He received his episcopal consecration on 20 August 2012 at St Anne’s Church in Bukit Mertajam [4] from Archbishop Murphy Nicholas Xavier Pakiam, with Bishops Antony Selvanayagam and Paul Tan Chee Ing serving as co-consecrators.
The parish was established in 1888 to accommodate the Chinese Catholics of Penang Island. The church grew further and in 1958, the current church, imposing a 107-foot-high belfry, was opened.
