Eleventh Naval District was one of six original numbered districts disestablished on 30 September 1980. All U.S. Navy and Marine Corps facilities, shore bases, and support commands in the southwestern United States from the former 11th Naval District are now part of Navy Region Southwest, headquartered in downtown San Diego, California.

From 1942 through July 1944, during World War II, the airfield at Twentynine Palms was utilized by the U.S. Army Air Force for primary flight training. What is now the "Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center" was taken over by the Eleventh Naval District, headquartered in San Diego, as Naval Auxiliary Air Station Twentynine Palms, in July 1944.

The Puritan is a 126-foot (38 m) gaff-rigged schooner designed by naval architect John Alden and built in 1930. Originally owned by Edward W. Brown in 1929, it was used as a patrol schooner by the United States Navy during World War II. The Puritan has been used mainly as a charter vessel and undergone numerous restorations.
Disarmed and with a reduced crew, the LSM then took up logistic support of the islands in that district. Homeported at Long Beach in October 1956, and renamed USS Oceanside (LSM-175) on 14 October 1959, she served the 11th Naval District until 1 February 1961, when she was placed out of service and struck from the Naval Vessel Register.
