A pump-jet, hydrojet, or water jet is a marine system that produces a jet of water for propulsion. The mechanical arrangement may be a ducted propeller ( axial-flow pump ), a centrifugal pump , or a mixed flow pump which is a combination of both centrifugal and axial designs.
The water forced through the impeller is channeled by the housing, creating a water jet that propels the vessel forward. The housing is normally tapered into a nozzle to increase the speed of the water, which also creates a Venturi effect in which low pressure behind the impeller pulls more water towards the blades, tending to increase the speed.
The acceleration of the water is achieved by using multiple impeller stages. Steering is accomplished by nozzles or small vanes that direct the water jet. Efficiency of the drive is related to the difference in speed of the vessel and the accelerated water producing the thrust.
