In 2016, West Bengal Legislative Assembly passed a resolution to change the name of West Bengal to "Bangla" in English, Bangla in Bengali and Bangal in Hindi. In 2016, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had proposed a new name of the state as Bangla.
