Dorset (/ ˈ d ɔːr s ɪ t / DOR-sit; archaically: Dorsetshire / ˈ d ɔːr s ɪ t. ʃ ɪər,-ʃ ər / DOR-sit-sheer, -shər) is a ceremonial county in South West England.It is bordered by Somerset to the north-west, Wiltshire to the north and the north-east, Hampshire to the east, the Isle of Wight across the Solent to the south-east, the English Channel to the south, and Devon to the west.

Dorchester (/ ˈ d ɔːr tʃ ɛ s t ər / DOR-ches-tər) is the county town of Dorset, England.It is situated between Poole and Bridport on the A35 trunk route. A historic market town, Dorchester is on the banks of the River Frome to the south of the Dorset Downs and north of the South Dorset Ridgeway that separates the area from Weymouth, 7 miles (11 km) to the south.
The 2021 census built-up area had a population of 196,455, making it the largest town in Dorset. Previously an uninhabited and rarely-visited heathland , other than by occasional fishermen and smugglers, a health resort was founded in the area by Lewis Tregonwell in 1810. [ 2 ]
Poole merges with several other towns to form the South East Dorset conurbation which has a combined population of over 465,000, forming one of the South Coast's major urban areas. [66] In the 2011 census , the population of the borough of Poole was 147,645, [ 1 ] an increase from 138,288 in 2001 . [ 67 ]
The population was very small, maybe only a few thousand across the whole of Britain, and concentrated along the coast: in Dorset, such places as the Isle of Purbeck, Weymouth, Chesil Beach and Hengistbury Head, and along the Stour valley.
