Uruapan has been the center of a territorial dispute between the Jalisco-based Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Los Viagras cartel based in Michoacán, where Uruapan is located. On August 8, 2019, Mexican authorities confirmed the discovery of 19 bodies in Uruapan, Michoacán. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel, through narcomantas, claimed responsibility for the massacre, in which bodies were displayed in three parts of the city. Six of the bodies found were hung on a vehicular bridge and others were found dismembered.

"El Licenciado"(The Bachelor) and the cartels alleged leader Servando "La Tuta" Gomez girlfriend Lourdes Medina Hernández in Uruapan.
