The New English Hymnal is a hymn book and liturgical source aimed towards the Church of England. First published in 1986, it is a successor to, and published in the same style as, the 1906 English Hymnal. [1] It is published today by SCM Canterbury Press, an imprint of Hymns Ancient and Modern Ltd.
The text of the hymn was first published in Lyte's The Spirit of the Psalms (1834), [2] a publication intended for the use of his own congregation in southern England. [1] It appeared in multiple influential publications, such as Hymns Ancient and Modern (1861) and The English Hymnal (1906). [3]
After its publication, use of the hymnal had been banned for a time by the Archbishop of Canterbury. [2] Ultimately, The English Hymnal, along with the Church Hymnal for the Christian Year, "undermined the uniformity of the Church of England and successfully challenged [the] hegemony" of Hymns Ancient and Modern, [11] of which a new and revised edition had been published two years previous.
For the first time, translations from languages other than Hebrew appeared, the "Ancient" in the title referring to the appearance of Phos Hilaron, translated from Greek by John Keble, and many hymns translated from Latin.
