Ilex opaca is a medium-sized broadleaved evergreen tree growing on average to 10–20 m (33–66 ft) wide, and up to 30 m (98 ft) tall. Typically, its trunk diameter reaches 50 cm (20 in), sometimes up to 120 cm (47 in). The bark is light gray, roughened by small warty lumps.
Ilex (/ ˈ aɪ l ɛ k s /) or holly [3] is a genus of over 570 species of flowering plants in the family Aquifoliaceae, and the only living genus in that family. [4] Ilex has the most species of any woody dioecious angiosperm genus. [5] The species are evergreen or deciduous trees, shrubs, and climbers from tropics to temperate zones worldwide.
The first instar larvae (crawlers) of Fiorinia theae are yellowish. The 2nd instar female is elongated with a dark brown scale cover, between 1.0 and 1.5 mm long. Immature males are smaller, less elongated and have a white scale cover.
Ilex × attenuata, the topal holly, is the result of a cross between Ilex cassine (dahoon) and Ilex opaca (American holly). It is a naturally occurring hybrid found in the southeastern United States where the ranges of the parents overlap, but hybrid cultivars have also been created. [ 2 ]
