The eastern painted turtle's diet is the least studied. It prefers to eat in the water, but has been observed eating on land. The fish it consumes are typically dead or injured. [120] The midland painted turtle eats mostly aquatic insects and both vascular and non-vascular plants. [123]
The painted terrapin is critically endangered species according to IUCN, listed in The World's Most 25 Endangered Freshwater Turtles and Tortoises 2011. The painted wood turtle feeds on fruit, insects, and worms. Their diet should consist of 60% leafy greens, 30% protein, and 20% fruits and vegetables. Along with a varied diet, they require additional calcium to insure healthy shell growth. Unlike aquatic turtles, the painted wood turtle doesn't require water in order to swallow its food.

This species of turtle is the most written about species (over 2000 science papers) and has been widely described in field guides, review articles, etc. I never find a really good way of understanding the subspecies descriptions though. To differentiate the eastern and southern, the top view is most important.
The eastern box turtle is the official state reptile of two U.S. states: North Carolina (which gives rise to the species and subspecies name carolina carolina) and Tennessee. [ 27 ] [ 28 ] [ 29 ] In Pennsylvania, the eastern box turtle made it through one house of the legislature, but failed to win final naming in 2009. [ 30 ]
