Dominion Line, a subsidiary of the International Mercantile Marine Company (IMM), ordered Regina in 1913. [1] Harland & Wolff built her on slip A in its Govan yard, launching her on 19 April 1917. Alexander Montgomery Carlisle, PC (8 July 1854 – 6 March 1926) brother-in-law to Viscount Pirrie, was one of the men involved with designing the Olympic-class ocean liners in the shipbuilding company Harland and Wolff. His main area of responsibility was the ships' safety systems such as the watertight compartments and lifeboats. [1]
HMS Havelock was laid down at the Harland and Wolff Ltd shipyard at Belfast on 12 December 1914. The ship was named General Grant in honour of the United States General Ulysses S Grant, however as the United States was still neutral, the ship was hurriedly renamed HMS M2 on 31 May 1915. She was then named HMS Havelock on 20 June 1915.
Wolff worked extensively at the yard, and was partly responsible for building of the engine works at Harland and Wolff in 1880. [2] [9] His company was the first to begin construction of the RMS Titanic. After the conversion of Harland and Wolff to limited company status in 1888, Wolff was appointed as a director. [2]
