At one point, the community was home to a sixteen-room tavern, wood shop, tailor shop, general store, cake shop, bakery, and several churches. [4] It was a trading center for a rural area devoted to cotton plantations. A post office called Mardisville was established in 1833, and operated until 1881. [5]

Fort Chinnabee was a defensive stockade built in 1813 by Chief Chinnabee and other allied Creeks for protection against Red Sticks during the Creek War. [7] The fort was built three miles north of Chinnabee's village on the north shore of Choccolocco Creek near the influx of Wolfskull Creek, six miles east of Oxford.

The Tannehill Ironworks is the central feature of Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park near the unincorporated town of McCalla in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. [2] Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Tannehill Furnace , it was a major supplier of iron for Confederate ordnance. [ 3 ]
