Bernina Express transport tickets are exactly the same cost as the regular trains, but the Bernina Express has a mandatory seat reservation fee, mainly to cover additional services, like panoramic carriage windows, headsets with multi-lingual narration of the sights along the way., wait-staff with service at your seat.
17332 posts. The Bernina Express route offers more dramatic scenery than the Golden Pass route, and is much more convenient if you are starting in Varenna. Head to Tirano and take one of the regional trains that runs that route; no need ton wait for the official Bernina Express that departs at 14:04.
The Bernina Express runs from Tirano Italy to Chur, Switzerland via St. Moritz and vice versa. It takes about 4 hours. After seeing most of the scenic train routes in Switzerland, this was the best, IMO. The Glacier Express was impressive but not more so than the Bernina Express train route and it takes 8 hours.
10/22/24 04:32 PM. 21096 posts. Although Varenna and Lake Como are likely pretty dead in February. Milan might be nice for 3 days. Since your Bernina Express does not depart until 2;24 pm, you have plenty of time to get to Tirano from Milan. You can get to Zurich in 1 1/4 hour from Chur. Luzern is another hour.
04/14/22 12:05 PM. 5317 posts. We took the train from Varenna to Tirano and the Bernina Express from there to St Moritz. This was in 2014, so schedules are likely to have changed, but perhaps will give you an idea of what is doable as a day trip. We took a morning train (approx 9:20 or 9:30) from Varenna and arriving at Tirano at 10:55am.
17338 posts. Two years ago we flew into Zurich on our way to Venice, specifically to take the train over Bernina Pass. After landing at Zurich, we took the train as far as Samedan, the village before Pontresina ( and after Chur). This was a good choice for us; a small scenic village with nice mountain views.
The Bernina Railway goes from st. Mortiz to Tirano. On the Bernina Railway there are two types of trains: The regular trains, and the "Bernina Express" trains. The regular trains all do st. Moritz - Tirano. The Bernina Express trains (there are several) do the same, except for one or two trains that is extended to Chur over the Albula Railway.
It is possible to take a day trip on the Bernina Express from Varenna, but it will be a long day. The trip from Varenna to Tirano is very straightforward (1H:28M direct) and you can easily buy tickets for that when you arrive in Italy. That's a Regionale train so there won't be any discounts for advance purchase.
I'm totally confused about the route of the Bernina Express. The Frommer's Guide says the 4 hour route begins in Zurich and ends in Lugano. But when I Googled the Bernina Express, it said the route was from Tirano to Chur! WHICH IS IT - AND WHY ARE 2 SUCH DIFFERENT ROUTES UNDER THE SAME NAME? Thanks!
