Garnett is named for W. A. Garnett, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, and early promoter of the town of Garnett. [5] [6] The city includes three places listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Anderson County Courthouse, Sennett and Bertha Kirk House, and Shelley-Tipton House. The city is also home to the 1858 Garnett House Hotel.
The business route northern terminus is the junction of US-169 and 6th Avenue in Garnett. The main highway bypasses the town to the southeast. The business route travels along 6th Avenue until Maple Street, where it intersects US-59 and K-31 until it ends at its intersection with US-169 at a roundabout south of Garnett in Anderson County.
It enters the state from Oklahoma south of Chetopa and passes through Parsons, Ottawa, Oswego, Moran, Garnett, and Lawrence. The route leaves Kansas for Missouri by crossing the Missouri River at Atchison. Most of the route climbs the cuestas of the Osage prairie, [2] while north of the Kansas River, it cuts through the glaciated region. [3]
