John Ebenezer Clare McFarlane was born on 12 December 1894 in Spanish Town, Saint Catherine Parish, Jamaica, to Charles Samuel McFarlane and Imogene Spence. [1] He was educated at Cornwall College, [2] and in 1913 entered the colonial civil service.
He received his education at Cornwall College in Jamaica and Queen's University in Ontario. [1] He later became an associate professor of ophthalmology at the latter institution, [1] as well as chief of ophthalmology at Cornwall Community Hospital in Canada. [1]
