Pocahontas (US: / ˌ p oʊ k ə ˈ h ɒ n t ə s /, UK: / ˌ p ɒ k-/; born Amonute, [1] also known as Matoaka and Rebecca Rolfe; c. 1596 – March 1617) was a Native American woman belonging to the Powhatan people, notable for her association with the colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia.
Thomas Rolfe was born in the English colony of Virginia to John Rolfe and his wife, Pocahontas, in January 1615. [1] It is believed he was born at the Rolfe family plantation, Varina, in what was then the corporation of James Cittie.
Rolfe married Pocahontas, daughter of Native American leader Powhatan, and they had a son named Thomas. Rolfe and Pocahontas traveled to England in 1616 to promote colonization and investment in Virginia. After Pocahontas died, Rolfe returned to Virginia and continued working with tobacco.
A brief period of peace came only after the capture of Pocahontas, her baptism, and her marriage to a tobacco planter, John Rolfe, in 1614. Within a few years, both Powhatan and Pocahontas were dead. Powhatan died in Virginia, but Pocahontas died in England. Meanwhile, the English settlers continued to encroach on Powhatan territory.

John Bolling was the son of Colonel Robert Bolling and Jane (née Rolfe) Bolling. [1] He was the only great-grandchild of Pocahontas and her husband, John Rolfe. [2]John Bolling was born at Kippax Plantation, in Charles City County, in the east central part of Virginia, a site which is now within the corporate limits of the City of Hopewell.
Rolfe and Pocahontas married April 16, 1614 and had their only son 8 months later on January 18, 1615. [ 10 ] [ 11 ] This was the first known inter-racial union in Virginia and helped to bring a brief period of better relations between the Indians and the colonists.
Travelling to Virginia in 1611, he was a popular religious leader with both settlers and natives, and was responsible for the baptism and conversion of Pocahontas at Henricus two years later. She took the baptismal name "Rebecca". Richard Buck presided at her marriage to John Rolfe on April 5, 1614.
