Fish Creek flows throughout its length, joining the Bow River on the east side of the park, and there is an artificial lake that offers swimming. With more than 100 kilometres (62 mi) of paved and unpaved trails, the park is a popular area for hiking and biking, as well as for picnicking, swimming, fishing, and observing wildlife.
It is located in the southeast quadrant of the city, within the Fish Creek Provincial Park, and is part of the Bow River basin. It lies at an elevation of 1,005 m (3,297 ft) and has a surface of 0.4 km 2 (40 ha; 99 acres). [1] First opened in late summer 1978, it is a swimming area open during the summer as a public beach.

Moose Mountain Provincial Park was designated a park in 1931. From then until 1935, several work projects around the park were completed. Work began in the spring of 1931 with the building of Moose Mountain Chalet, landscaping, building of Main Beach on Kenosee Lake, and a road going south connecting the park to Carlyle Lake and the town of Carlyle, and going north to Kennedy.

The property had been part of the 310,000 acres The Nature Conservancy and The Trust for Public Land purchased in 2008 from Plum Creek Timber as part of the Montana Legacy Project through which the company divested a large portion of its holdings for purposes of conservation and use by the public.
