In this capacity St. Mary's College of Maryland, in partnership with Historic St. Mary's City, [12] [30] [31] also runs the Historical Archaeology Field School [30] which is an internationally recognized institution. The field school has worked on over 300 archaeological dig sites in the St. Mary's City area over the last 40 years.

From 1933 to 1955 the school was known as St. Mary's High School. In 1957, the upper school was relocated to a new campus in Hagerstown's North End and was renamed St. Maria Goretti High School in honor of the Italian saint Maria Goretti , who "lost her life at the age of 11 in order to protect her purity". [ 2 ]
