The University of Delhi (UOD), informally known as Delhi University (DU), is a collegiate public central university, located in New Delhi, India. It was founded in 1922 by an Act of the Central Legislative Assembly. As a collegiate university, its main functions are divided between the academic departments of the university and affiliated colleges.
It is ranked 27th among colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2024, [3] the institution has produced distinguished alumni in the field of science. It has been honoured with 'Star College' status by the Ministry of Science and Technology (Government of India).
Internationally, the University of Delhi was ranked 328 in the QS World University Rankings of 2025 [53] and 81 in Asia. It was ranked 801-1000 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2025, [59] 201–250 in Asia in 2025 [60].It was ranked 601–700 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities of 2025. It was ranked twelfth among all the colleges in India by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2024 and accredited A++ with a CGPA of 3.71 by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). [10] In 2024, India Today ranked it as the 3rd best college for commerce [11] and science [12] and the 6th best for arts [13] in India.
St. Stephen's College is a constituent college of the University of Delhi. Awarding both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, it is widely considered to be the oldest, most prestigious liberal arts and sciences college in India. [3] [4] The college has an acceptance rate of 1.33%. [5] [6]
Admissions are done purely based on merit and as per the Delhi University norms. It is ranked 14th among colleges in India by NIRF, 2022. [ 2 ] Subsequently, in 2024 Outlook has ranked it: 6th in the Humanities stream, 9th in the Science stream and 13th in Commerce stream.
