Berkeley High School is a public high school in the Berkeley Unified School District, and the only public high school in the city of Berkeley, California, United States. It is located one long block west of Shattuck Avenue and three short blocks south of University Avenue in Downtown Berkeley. The school mascot is the Yellowjacket.
Prior to the CAHSEE, the high school exit exams in California were known as the High School Competency Exams and were developed by each district pursuant to California law. In 1999, California policy-makers voted to create the CAHSEE in order to have a state exam that was linked to the state’s new academic content standards. [4]
The purposes of the standards include; Creating science-literate citizens; Creating common standards for teaching in the U.S. Making science and engineering relevant for and accessible to all students; Developing greater interest in science among students so that more of them choose to major in science and technology in college.
The secondary campus (middle and high school) opened in 2000. The elementary campus is located in Los Angeles and the middle and upper school campus is located in West Los Angeles. There are approximately 300 students in grades K-5, the elementary campus, and 400 in grades 6–12 at the middle and upper school campus.
There are five middle schools for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, one for every attendance area. (Added 6th Grade at all middle schools by 2023–2024 school year.)
