Honda began researching All Terrain Vehicles as early as 1967. [1] Within 18 months they had designed and shipped their first three-wheeled vehicle, designated US90 , as a 1970 model. Honda's dominance of the ATC market peaked in 1984, with 370,000 units shipped and a 69% market share. [ 2 ]

Points are awarded throughout the season in several different competition classes of ATV and SxS Mud Racing. The 2008 year included Mud Bog and Mudda-Cross competitions, but the 2009 and future seasons will only have Mudda-Cross competitions. Classes range from 0–499 cc to a Super-Modified class which will allow any size ATV in competition.
The 2014 model year brought a redesigned rancher on the market. Although the engine and transmission remained unchanged, most of the ATV had been updated or redesigned. Changes included a new body and frame, a new in-tank fuel pump design, an updated instrument cluster, and later on a new utility rack design.
Honda introduced the Rincon as their new top-of-the-line ATV using their largest ATV liquid-cooled four-stroke engine. The Rincon was the first ATV to feature an automotive-style automatic 3 speed transmission which shifts either automatically or can be switched to manual mode (called the Electronic Shift Program).
All model years were fully suspended and adjustable, using air-assisted front forks and a single, remote reservoir gas-charged rear shock. 1981–1982 models offered 6.7 inches of front suspension travel and 4.3 inches in the rear, 1983–1984 offered 8.7 inches in front and 8.1 inches rear, while post-1985 models allowed 9.8 inches of travel.
The US90 designation was used until 1973, when Honda successfully trademarked the moniker ‘All Terrain Cycle’. [2] The designation was then changed to ATC90. The ATC prefix would be used for all Honda Three-Wheeled-Vehicles until production ceased in 1987, and become a universal epithet for other manufacturers three-wheeled machines.
