Hepatitis B is an infectious disease caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) that affects the liver; [1] [6] it is a type of viral hepatitis. [7] It can cause both acute and chronic infection. [1] Many people have no symptoms during an initial infection.
Entecavir, sold under the brand name Baraclude, is an antiviral medication used in the treatment of hepatitis B virus infection. [6] In those with both HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B virus antiretroviral medication should also be used. [6] Entecavir is taken by mouth as a tablet or solution. [6]
Telbivudine is an antiviral drug used in the treatment of hepatitis B infection. It is marketed by Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis under the trade names Sebivo (European Union) and Tyzeka (United States). Clinical trials have shown it to be significantly more effective than lamivudine or adefovir, and less likely to cause resistance.
Lamivudine has been used for treatment of chronic hepatitis B at a lower dose than for treatment of HIV/AIDS. It improves the seroconversion of e-antigen positive hepatitis B and also improves histology staging of the liver. Long-term use of lamivudine leads to emergence of a resistant hepatitis B virus (YMDD) mutant. [11]
HBsAg (hepatitis B surface antigen) was the first hepatitis B virus protein to be discovered. [15] It consists of small (S), medium (M) and large (L) protein. [16] HBcAg (hepatitis B core antigen) is the main structural protein of HBV icosahedral nucleocapsid and it has function in replication of the virus. [17]
Hepatitis D is a defective virus that requires hepatitis B to replicate and is only found with hepatitis B co-infection. [17] In adults, hepatitis B infection is most commonly self-limiting, with less than 5% progressing to chronic state, and 20 to 30% of those chronically infected developing cirrhosis or liver cancer. [31]
Hepatitis C treatment guidelines also vary based on whether you have cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) and how severe it is. Related: 15 Celebrities With Hepatitis C, from Natasha Lyonne to David ...
The DAA drugs against hepatitis C are taken orally, as tablets, for 8 to 12 weeks. [56] The treatment depends on the type or types of hepatitis C virus that are causing the infection. [57] Both during and at the end of treatment, blood tests are used to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment and subsequent cure. [56]
