A fan clutch is a thermostatic engine cooling fan that can freewheel at low temperatures when cooling is not needed, allowing the engine to warm up faster, relieving unnecessary load on the engine. As temperatures increase, the clutch engages so that the fan is driven by engine power and moves air to cool the engine.
For vertical flight, 29,000 hp [14] [15] [16] is transferred by an extension shaft on the engine fan using a clutch [17] and bevel-gearbox to a contra-rotating lift-fan located forward of the engine. The fan airflow (low-velocity unheated air) leaves through thrust-vectoring vanes on the underside of the aircraft, and balances the lift from the ...
To activate the compressor the clutch is activated. This connects the air conditioning compressor's shaft end to a pulley driven by the engine's crankshaft through a belt. Electromagnetic clutches have been used on diesel locomotives, e.g. by Hohenzollern Locomotive Works.

At the same time an auxiliary inlet is opened on top of the aircraft to provide additional air to the engine with low distortion during the hover. [34] The low pressure (LP) turbine drives the lift fan through a shaft extension on the front of the LP rotor and a clutch. The engine operates as a separate flow turbofan with a higher bypass ratio ...
