Lava lamps An original Mathmos Astro lava lamp A lava lamp is a decorative lamp , invented in 1963 by British entrepreneur Edward Craven Walker , the founder of the lighting company Mathmos . It consists of a bolus of a special coloured wax mixture inside a glass vessel, the remainder of which contains clear or translucent liquid.
Also within the bulb were metal sculptures coated with phosphors. These phosphors fluoresced when excited by glow discharge. Because glow discharge occurs readily at 110-120 volts AC, one could use these bulbs in standard household lamps in the United States. The phosphors used in the bulbs were somewhat brittle, necessitating care in handling.
In 2016, Mathmos launched Neo, the first lava lamp tested for children and adults, and opened a “Special Projects” division offering giant bespoke lava lamps. The first one is in Selfridges, London as part the new accessories department designed by David Chipperfield. [16] In 2017 Mathmos launched Neo wall the only wall mounted lava lamp.

The bulb was made by hand, using a carbon filament (of greater thickness and strength than the tungsten filaments used in most modern lightbulbs) along with brass and glass components of high quality. The low wattage (originally 60 watts, now approximately four) and high nitrogen atmosphere inside the bulb have also contributed to its longevity.
