Portable solar chargers are used to charge cell phones and other small electronic devices on the go. Chargers on the market today use various types of solar panels, ranging from thin film panels with efficiencies from 7-15% (amorphous silicon around 7%, CIGS closer to 15%), to the slightly more efficient monocrystalline panels which offer efficiencies up to 18%.
Solar cars are electric cars that use photovoltaic (PV) cells to convert sunlight into electrical power to charge the car's battery and to power the car's electric motors. Solar cars have been designed for solar car races and for public use. Solar vehicles must be light and efficient to get the best range from their limited captured power.
Fixed mount solar chargers are also known as solar panels. These are often connected to the electrical grid via control and interface circuits, whereas portable solar chargers are used off-grid (i.e. cars, boats, or RVs). Although portable solar chargers obtain energy only from the sun, they can charge in low light like at sunset.
As with other small solar roofs, it didn't do much — offering just 200 watts of charging, it would take upward of a month to charge the car's 20-kWh main battery under average conditions.
The car will only charge at around 1 or 2 kW, which is five times slower than a home wallbox-style charger, and more than 100 times slower than what many electric cars are capable of.
