San Luis Obispo (Spanish for 'St. Louis the Bishop'; / s æ n ˌ l uː ɪ s ə ˈ b ɪ s p oʊ / san LOO-iss ə-BISS-poh; [9] Spanish: [san ˈlwis oˈβispo]; Chumash: tiłhini) is a city and county seat of San Luis Obispo County, in the U.S. state of California.
The Pacific Coast Railway was a 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge railway on the Central Coast of California.The original 10-mile (16 km) link from San Luis Obispo to Avila Beach and Port Harford was later built southward to Santa Maria and Los Olivos, with branches to Sisquoc and Guadalupe.
The line was constructed as the Santa Cruz Railroad between 1873–1876 and was laid with narrow gauge rail. After foreclosure, it was sold to Southern Pacific (through a subsidiary Pacific Improvement Company) who converted the line to standard gauge and operated until the merger into Southern Pacific on May 14, 1888.
