Louis Agassiz Fuertes (February 7, 1874 – August 22, 1927) was an American ornithologist, illustrator and artist who set the rigorous and current-day standards for ornithological art and naturalist depiction and is considered one of the most prolific American bird artists, second only to his guiding professional predecessor John James Audubon.
Educated in Rochester and at the Regent Street Polytechnic, he was a skilled bird and mammal painter, holding annual exhibitions of his paintings and etchings. The subjects of his etchings were snipe, Canada geese, mallard and kingfishers. He also gave lectures on bird watching and the drawing of birds, with an emphasis on birds in flight.
The bird artist Robert Verity Clem (1933-2010) encouraged her to draw living birds in nature. She describes the work of Lars Jonsson as one of her main influences. After studying art, anthropology and biology from 1976, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University in 1981.
