Between 1831 and 1995, Soignies elected its own member of the Chamber of Representatives. Several of the city streets are named after these past representatives. Today, the cut-stone and glass industries are still active. Soignies is also the center of a vibrant service industry, especially in education and health.
The Church of Saint-Vincent was established as a Benedictine monastery in the forests of Soignies, in the pagus Hainonensis (now Hainaut Province) by Vincent Madelgarius. [1] The monks who entered the monastery adhered to the order of St. Benedict. [2] Vincent was later buried in the monastery of Soignies. [3]
