Illinois Route 1 (IL 1) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Illinois. Running parallel to the Indiana border, the highway starts at the free ferry crossing to Kentucky at Cave-in-Rock on the Ohio River and runs north to the south side of Chicago as Halsted Street at an intersection with Interstate 57 .
The highway curves to the north and intersects the northern terminus of KY 3193. It crosses over Frozen Boone Fork immediately before an intersection with the northern terminus of KY 541 (Mt. Carmel Road). KY 205 heads to the northeast, paralleling the fork, and has an interchange with KY 15/KY 1812. Here, KY 205 and KY 1812 begin a concurrency.
I-39/US-51 join I-90, making US 51 one of the few toll highways in Illinois that is a U.S. Highway. US 51 exits I-39/I-90 just a mile south of the Wisconsin state line. Then US 51 follows Illinois Route 75 (IL 75) west to the intersection of IL 251, and then turns north through South Beloit, Illinois to enter Wisconsin.
