Herbert Jeffrey Hancock (born April 12, 1940) is an American jazz musician, bandleader, and composer. [2] He started his career with trumpeter Donald Byrd's group. Hancock soon joined the Miles Davis Quintet, where he helped to redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section and was one of the primary architects of the post-bop sound.
The jazz legend played a sold-out Pabst Theater Tuesday 10 days shy of his 84th birthday, with Terence Blanchard among his esteemed bandmates.
After his departure from Blue Note, Hancock signed with Warner Bros. Records, publishing three albums in which he experimented with new jazz music directions: the R&B-oriented Fat Albert Rotunda (1969) and the electronic-oriented Mwandishi (1971) and Crossings (1972).
The group first came together at the 1976 Newport Jazz Festival to headline a Herbie Hancock retrospective concert, which featured the reunited Miles Davis Quintet (sans Davis, who had temporarily retired from music a year prior) alongside Hancock's contemporary fusion groups Mwandishi and the Headhunters.
Hancock released it as a single from his studio album Future Shock (1983). The selection was composed by Hancock, Laswell, and Beinhorn. The track was driven by its deejay scratch style, performed primarily by DXT, and its music video created by Godley & Creme, featuring the robotic art of Jim Whiting, which was put in high rotation on MTV.
