From its initial sign-on, in 1940, WKPT (AM) broadcast a full-service format of music, news, and play-by-play sports. WKPT promoted itself as "The Nation's Model Station" and was an NBC Radio Network affiliate. WKPT's studios were destroyed by fire in September 1946. "Bud" Walters (still company president today) applied to the Federal Communications Commission for permit to construct WKCM, a country-formatted AM station in Hawesville, Kentucky.
