The Rocky Mount, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of two counties – Edgecombe and Nash – in eastern North Carolina, anchored by the city of Rocky Mount. As of the 2010 census, the MSA had a population of 152,392. [2] It is commonly referred to as the Twin Counties. [3]
Nash County rests in the northeastern part of North Carolina [4] along the dividing line between the Peidmont and Coastal Plain regions. [3] According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 542.82 square miles (1,405.9 km 2), of which 540.44 square miles (1,399.7 km 2) is land and 2.38 square miles (6.2 km 2) (0.44%) is covered by water. When Hurricane Floyd inundated Rocky Mount in September 1999, many of the city's cultural facilities were destroyed, including its downtown Children's Museum and Arts Center as well as the Playhouse community theater in the Nashville Road area. Rocky Mount chose to recreate a new facility at the Imperial Tobacco site. [4]
