The University of Sheffield (informally Sheffield University [7] [8] or TUOS) [9] [10] is a public research university in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. Its history traces back to the foundation of Sheffield Medical School in 1828, Firth College in 1879 and Sheffield Technical School in 1884. [ 1 ]

The Octagon Centre, built in 1983, is a multi-purpose conference centre and music venue at the University of Sheffield, England.Situated in the Western Bank campus, it is joined by a skyway to University House and comprises an eight-sided auditorium with a capacity of 1,500 (1,000 seated), offices, meeting rooms, and a lounge with bar and patio.

[4] It was the university's main library until the Information Commons was opened in April 2007. Western Bank Library is linked to the Arts Tower (opened later in 1966) via a bridge between their mezzanine floors
The building itself houses the University of Sheffield's Departments of Biomedical Science and Animal & Plant Science [1] including its associated museum. It also houses the Perak Laboratories, used by students reading degrees from Medicine to Bioengineering, a computer centre, several lecture theatres and the Hillsborough Centre, [2] for disabled and dyslexic students.
The School is Number One in the World for Library and Information Studies in the QS World University Rankings 2021. [5] The school has ranked highest or joint highest in its subject rating in every Research Assessment Exercise since the running of the first exercise in 1986.
The building is open to University of Sheffield staff and students 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. On Thursday 2 February 2017, the IC hosted the University of Sheffield #1lib1ref event. As of 2016, the Information Commons hosts the University's Digital Commons, a collaborative space to develop innovations in Digital Learning.
