Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,771. [1] The county seat is Jefferson. [2] The county is named in honor of General Nathanael Greene. [3]

The East Greene and Jefferson–Scranton districts consolidated into the Greene County Community School District on July 1, 2014. [15] The Greene County district continued operating the Grand Junction school until 2017. In 2017 the city government decided to demolish the former Grand Junction school.
Residents are in the Greene County Community School District, [13] which operates Greene County Elementary, Greene County Middle, and Greene County High schools in Jefferson. [14] It was part of the Scranton School District until July 1, 1992, when that district merged into the Jefferson–Scranton Community School District. [15]
