The emblem is an image of a shanyrak (Kazakh: Шаңырақ, Şañyraq; more often seen in the Russian transcription, Шанырак, shanyrak), the upper dome-like portion of a yurt, against a sky blue background which irradiates (in the form of sun rays) uyks (supports) set off by wings of mythical horses, inspired by Tulpar, which represent bravery. Kazakhstan, [d] officially the Republic of Kazakhstan, [e] is a landlocked country primarily in Central Asia, with a small portion situated in Eastern Europe. [f] It borders Russia to the north and west, China to the east, Kyrgyzstan to the southeast, Uzbekistan to the south, and Turkmenistan to the southwest, with a coastline along the Caspian Sea.
The current emblem is based on the one adopted in 1998 along with the city flag, at the 16th session of the Astana City Mäslihat in 1998. [1] In 2019 the city was renamed from Astana to Nur-Sultan. As the city name features on both the emblem and city flag, both insignia were updated to the new name in 2019.
