The Northcott is the seventh building in Exeter to be used as a theatre. In 1962, the Theatre Royal, Exeter, was demolished to be replaced by an office block; however, there were many people in Exeter who were determined that the city should not be without a theatre for very long.

The musical opened 22 October 1988 at the Northcott Theatre, in Exeter, England, and ran for a limited season of five weeks. It then played at the Cambridge Theatre on Seven Dials in London's Covent Garden area from 24 April to 8 July 1989. [1] During this time there were public transit strikes that Ron Moody worked into the script through ad-libs.
Today the theatre is operated as a charity and is used as a venue for amateur and professional theatrical companies. The building is owned by Exeter City Council and was leased to Barnfield Theatre Limited, who ran the theatre until December 2021, when its management was taken over by the Northcott Theatre .
