The district is 2 miles east of downtown Nashville. The area was developed between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Historically, it has been a middle class area. There are 352 buildings in the district and the majority of the buildings are single family homes. The district also has several churches a corner store and a school.
The system came online in February 1974, utilizing a now-91,000-foot network of underground pipes to heat and cool more than 40 Metro, state and privately-owned buildings in downtown Nashville.
In 2011, Montgomery Bell Academy added the new Lowry Building in late December. In 2012, the school's new building, the Wallace Building, was completed. In addition to these new structures, a geothermal heating and cooling system was added. The school has also constructed new, porous parking lots to facilitate the new irrigation system.
The area has been the retail center of Nashville. The area is 4.5 acres (1.8 ha) and the borders are Church Street to the south, Union Street to the north, Fourth Avenue to the east and Sixth Avenue to the west. [2] One of the historic buildings from the district is the Woolworth building.
