She previously headed the Laboratory for Exoplanets and Stellar Astrophysics. She studies star forming regions of our galaxy using radio, optical, and infrared telescopes, [6] with a particular interest in molecular cloud cores, protostars, and outflows. She led a major study that mapped a star forming region in the constellation Orion. [7]
The telescope is named after James E. Webb, who was the administrator of NASA from 1961 to 1968 during the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs. Webb's primary mirror consists of 18 hexagonal mirror segments made of gold -plated beryllium , which together create a 6.5-meter-diameter (21 ft) mirror, compared with Hubble's 2.4 m (7 ft 10 in).
Edward's brother, William, was a graduate of MIT and professor of physics and astronomy. [5] Edward was interested in the stars as a boy and constructed his own telescope by the age of 12. [ 6 ] Pickering enjoyed his work at the observatory, but he also enjoyed mountain climbing and bicycling in earlier days and later he was an interested ...
A new type of black hole was discovered in galaxy M82, mid-mass objects purported to be the missing link between stellar-sized black holes and super massive black holes. [29] X-ray emission lines were associated for the first time with a gamma-ray burst, Beethoven Burst GRB 991216. [30]
Soon to be called "quasi-stellar radio sources" , Parkes observation was the first time this type of object to be associated with an optical counterpart. [ 19 ] 1964 to 1966, all-sky survey at 408 MHz of the southern sky is conducted and published (first version of the Parkes Catalogue of Radio Sources ) finding over 2000 radio sources ...
