Avoriaz (French:, Franco-Provençal: [aˈvɔʁja, aˈvɔʁi]) [1] is a French mountain resort in the Portes du Soleil in the French commune of Morzine, [2] on a shelf above the town of Morzine. Cars are forbidden in Avoriaz; transport includes horse-drawn sleighs and snowcats during winter.
There are thirteen resorts in the Portes du Soleil area, of which seven are French and five are Swiss. Most of the resorts have grown around traditional valley villages - only Avoriaz and the very small Les Crosets and Torgon were purposely built during the mid-sixties. Morzine and Chatel are the largest of the traditional towns in the area.

The commune of La Clusaz is classified a winter sports resort and of alpinism per decree of 18 June 1969. The first luge was added in 1985, before the first snow cannon in 1994. La Clusaz is part of the Aravis skiing area which it shares with the neighbouring resort of Le Grand-Bornand to offer a total of 220 km (140 mi) of pistes. [3]
Until the 1930s the village of Les Carroz was a simple farming hamlet with only a few houses. It is now developing into the nearest large ski resort to Geneva. By 1981 Les Carroz had been linked to the nearby ski villages of Samoëns, Morillon and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, and the resort of Flaine, developed in the 1960s.
