The line was opened in 1915 and extended 4.5 miles (7.2 km) from Catterick Bridge station to a railway station in the middle of the garrison called Camp Centre, climbing steeply in its first 3 miles (5 km) at a gradient of 1-in-50, then 1-in-46.
The key from a typical cadastral map from the 1890s showed four types of subdivisions; the parish, county, land district and land division. This one is located in the County of Wallace The Crown Lands Act of 1884 further divided New South Wales into three land divisions; Western , Central and Eastern ; as well as Land Boards and Land Districts.
The lakes are located approximately 110 kilometres (68 mi) south-east of Broken Hill [1] in the semi-arid zone on grey clay and duplex soils, and siliceous and calcareous sands of the far west region. The lakes range in size from 103–15,900 hectares (250–39,290 acres). The largest are Lakes Menindee, Wetherell, Pamamaroo and Cawndilla.
