The following table presents a listing of Burundi's 18 provinces ranked in order of the total population of their communes as recorded in the 2008 census, taking into account the creation of Rumonge Province from parts of Bujumbura Rural and Bururi in March 2015.
Bururi Province was created on 26 September 1960 as part of national political and administrative reforms initiated by the Belgian colonial administration in Ruanda-Urundi. Burundi became independent in 1962 and the province was retained in the new national constitution. [3] The provincial capital is Bururi.
