The change needs the approval of the National Assembly and the Senate to take effect. [2]

The provincial organisation of Burundi has been reformed on a number of occasions with the newest subdivisions dating in March 2023. With this new administrative subdivision has substantially reduced the number of provinces, communes and hills. The 18 provinces were combined and reduced into 5 provinces. [2]
