The Department Store Historic District is a historic district in the Downtown Hartford neighborhood of the city of Hartford, Connecticut, United States.. It is a 5-acre (2.0 ha) area that, in 1995, included three contributing buildings, one other contributing structure, and one contributing object.
It extends a short way west on Hat Shop Hill Road, which forms a four-way junction with Main Street and Clapboard Road near the center of the district. There are more than 60 historic buildings in the district, including the 1807 Congregation church (restyled with Greek Revival elements in 1842.

Read's Department Stores was a Bridgeport, Connecticut-based retail chain founded in 1857 by D. M. Read. Known for its classy, upscale merchandise, the flagship store was once hailed as New England's largest department store. It expanded to several other locations in the 1950s and 1960s, but these closed progressively through the 1980s and 1990s.
