The East Texas Oil Boom of the early 1930s saw the town grow. A post office was established in November 1932 and the name changed to "Greggton" around the same time. In 1920, the town had a population of 180. By 1936, the population had grown to 1,500 with 125 businesses and by 1949, the population had grown to 2,350. [2]

Clarksville City is located in northwestern Gregg County along U.S. Route 80, 10 miles (16 km) west of Longview and 2.5 miles (4.0 km) east of Gladewater. The city is bordered by Gladewater to the west, Warren City to the northwest, and White Oak to the east. Lake Deverina on Campbell Creek is in the southern part of Clarksville City.
