Two sailors on separate boats have died in boom accidents two hours apart on a storm-ravaged first night of the annual Sydney to Hobart race, adding to the event's long history of deaths at sea.
The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race is an annual event hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, starting in Sydney, New South Wales on Boxing Day then heading south through the Tasman Sea, past Bass Strait, into Storm Bay and up the Derwent River, to cross the finish line in Hobart, Tasmania.
Just over 24 hours into the race, 85 entrants were still sailing and 19 yachts had retired at sea or in port. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to the sailors who died. “We have sadly awoken to tragedy in the Sydney to Hobart with the awful news two sailors have lost their lives,” he said.
