In May 1996 a strategic alliance was signed with the second most important Mexican television station: TV Azteca.As a result of this alliance, on Wednesday, 1 January 1997, TV Azteca acquired 75 percent of the shares of Canal 12 and became the majority shareholder, in partnership with Jorge Emilio Zedán and the Salvadoran-Palestinian entrepreneur, Armando Bukele Kattán.

Television in El Salvador began in 1956 in black and white on YSEB-TV, which would bring attention to the radio broadcasting industry in the 1960s. It was so much so that it was part of the Salvadoran Association Broadcasting (ASDER) in 1964 to confront stagnation, in response to the political crisis during the era of military authoritarianism.
On March 27, 2022, the government of El Salvador, chaired by Nayib Bukele since June 1, 2019, declared a state of national emergency after recording a significant increase in homicides. Between March 25 and 27, 87 murders were reported, which represented the highest number of violent deaths in a weekend since the Salvadoran civil war ended in 1992.
